I have written many poems, Mother darling
Describing the wonder mother that you were.
But since each reader will declare
His mother far beyond compare,
He wants to read a poem about her.
He wants the world to know about her patience
And how she carefully controlled her willful child.
Whenever he would stray
She would turn him on his way
In direction that would keep him undefiled.
She put so much love in dishes set before him
That they nourished both his body and his soul.
Though he never understood
How so easily she could
Add everything he needed to that bowl.
In the evening she would linger by his bedside.
Read a story and then listen to his prayer.
And if in the dark of night
He awakened with a fright,
He knew his loving mother would be there.
So I hope you don’t mind sharing honors, Mother
With those others thought of lovingly today.
They are still sending their love
From the Heavens up above
And guiding their dear children on their way.
