The Vow of Abuse

When love was new, she felt so sure that he
was perfect for her! Everywhere they’d go
together, and he’d call her constantly.
They quickly married, for he loved her so!

He made a promise; this is what he’d do:
watch over her forever, and she found
it so romantic, but she had no clue
how closely to that man she would be bound.

He certainly watched over her, for she
was forced to quit her job. Each dime she spent
was monitored. She had no privacy.
He even checked each email that she sent.

Too soon she learned he kept his vow too well.
To have someone watch over her was hell.

Hold on too tight, it slips away. We've all heard it said in many ways. Young love so promising, but that was then. So sad when it's told again and again. A prayer for peace and a breath of fresh air. A solemn vow that they both can share. Peace Andrea. :) This is a gritty one.

I know some couples like this...a little jealousy is a good thing...too much is a terrible thing. Great write, Andrea.

I've seen a taste of relationships like this (though the roles were reversed... the girl being the overseer). Best of luck on the contest! I wrote about abuse awhile back... though it goes way over 16 lines and touches on a very sensitive topic. When I become brave I'll post it.

Right on girl. I agree with you. To have someone watch over you. is OK, but not that way. Thanks for sharing, Lucilla

you've captured the way this story often goes down so well! i think your final couplet is brilliant!

I've seen this go both ways, over possessiveness is a poison to any relationship. A very good write on this subject. You might do well to write a book of poems for would be brides. Take care, Richard

What a terrible thing! Here is our demon who first was disguised as saint! Sad story but many times true! Beautiful writing though! Thank you!

Quite true the picture portrayed Andrea..And i wonder if some..some meaning a few people don't even realise, or admit to themselves that this is the case..' If so how can it be ended??

I'm glad you pointed out that not all abuse if physical abuse, there is also mental abuse (and sexual abuse)! The one abuse that seems to accompany one or both of the other abuses is mental abuse, it can also exist alone! This is a prime example of how mental abuse can exist alone! This is a sad tale, I am deeply saddened by this write, it is troubling as well! And this is due to the fact that you have written it so very well! What an amazing piece you have written, Great Work!!

Ouch! Unfortunately I've known women in that situation. What does one do? Escape, I hope... Jack

No one has ever had a more sheltered life than I. First family, husband and now my children. That is why I chose to choose an item from the news. Yes that monster from Utah and yes he was a school bus driver until recently. Joyce

Love is all about freedom, allowing the other to live a complete and fulfilling life. You bring the sublety to this kind of abuse forcefully to the fore. Well-written, Andrea. Stay well, David
