Dressage Rider

Dressage Rider

O for the skills to calm a flighty horse.
Compact its trombone limbs with reins and legs.
Exact perfection without noticeable force,
all trouble and delight that beauty begs.

One horse, one rider, indivisible;
sky-born with earth-bound duty to endorse.
Control from legs and seat must be invisible,
obeying smooth transitions on the course.

Struck by awe, crowds watch, as in a trance
a pleasure trip controlled by aids precise.
Such liveliness contained in equine dance,
by what divine device - this Paradise?

Each discipline involved must scarce be seen.
Before our eyes must seem a floating dream.

    Delightful reading with much to send our thoughts beyond the actual subject of dressage rider. For example with our eyes currently on the NCAA, coaches might profit from less flamboyance from the bench. (Of course, the King of such behavior is now commentator instead of coach.)

    Hi..I just watched the 2012 London Olympic Dressage winner. Your poem captures the beauty, grace, and unity between horse and rider. It was flawless. I never saw any exchanges between the two. Effortless beauty.. Thanks for sharing..xx Holly Moore

    Suzanne as a horse lover I adore this poem. Though I'm a Western rider, lovingthe trails, I can certainly appreciate the skills in dressage. Thank you for this poem. Rick

    Thanks Rick: I have always adored horses and this one came to me after watching the Olympics...can those horses be real? PS I tried Western riding and English saddles but they are on opposite poles...the saddle I am most comfortable in is an Australian Stock saddle... which is between the two, Have you ever tried one.
