The Smell of Home

We’d come back from the airport
And she walked in through the door
She inhaled deeply…
And then took a few breaths more
She turned around and smiled
With that sparkle in her eye
“Oh, Mama…this is what we smell like”

I looked at her in confusion
Daddy didn’t know what to say
She just twirled around and said,
“This is the smell of home.”

Lovely poem on a much-neglected sense. Smells are ever so gentle in their reminders; unlike sounds and sights.
