The Unexplored Road

The Unexplored Road

By Elton Camp

The teenage marriage proved to be a mistake
One that brought Trudy trouble and heartache

She was sixteen and Matt only one year older
She refused to listen to what others told her

Both dropped school to make it on their own
Meaning of minimum wage they were shown

Paying for food, clothing, rent and an old car
The money they could make didn’t go very far

Work around the house their parents had done
Took so much time there was none left for fun

The marriage became the bane of their life
Rather than happiness, it brought them strife

Each of the couple the other began to blame
This is all your fault, each of them did claim

The marriage Trudy most especially did rue
When she saw Matt on a date with Betty Sue

Blame for the affair Matt was unwilling to take
“I’ve learned that marrying you was a mistake”

By his conduct, Matt had set young Trudy free
She left to discover what else there could be

Around the curve, who knows what she’ll find
Is she now wiser, or will love again be blind?
