Winter Be Gone

Your hands cold as death
Your bite killing like snake’s venom
Your breath leaving trees bereft
Of leaves, stripped, lonesome

Birds migrating to warmer land
Grizzly bears for hibernating send
To earth a carpet of snow lend
Chestnuts in the lap of fire spend

Gloved hands holding golden cognac in goblets
Men & women dressed in warm leather jackets
Wines, roasted almonds, soups and turkey breasts
Enjoy the gift of comfort and rests

On the other side of this scenario
People in numbers and not few
That suffer profusely because of you
Their tattered clothes are no shield
Of your ruthless biting teeth

Ill nourished, frail and ailing lots
Not haves but have nots
Your victims, your prey, weak and forlorn
Cry out ‘winter be gone’, ‘winter be gone’

Thanks for visiting my poem and for your appreciation, Anne. As for the long winter experienced by you, I offer my sympathies. For the same reason I moved to warmer Karachi, Pakistan from Portugal for a few winter months. Recently, I had to travel to Islamabad on the invitation of Pakistan Academy of Letters to attend an International Conference of Writers an Intellectuals. I virtually froze in that city. When on my return to Karachi I was thawing, I caught Flu which has taken over a week to cure. Love

And my toes suffer too Mohammad; living in Canada is not easy this time of year and this makes me wonder where you are. I think there are may who don't have the necessities to be warm and it is very sad. You think of others so often in your poems! Love, Elizabeth

Thanks for your comments on my poem, Elizabeth. As it started getting too cold in Portugal I shifted to warmer Karachi for a few months. I'll return when it is Spring there and summer in Karachi. My poems reflect my personality. I write what I truly feel. When I see poverty my heart bleeds. I am a lover of mankind.
