About This Poem

The Train Don't Come By

Old wooden benches covered in dust
Windows broken, some glass on the floor
I long for a seven day ride on the rails
But the train don't come by here no more
Those days are gone when the railroad was king
And you could hear that whistle each night
I still jump on board in my nostalgic dreams
Riding that freight train clean out of sight
Summer days, I walk along the old tracks
Where the blueberries are still growing wild
While I'm walking I daydream about
The days when I was a child
I walk by the station and think back to the days
When passengers rode by the score
I'd like one time to take a seven day ride
But the train don't come by here no more.

This poem has a flavor not of this century. It has a transcendent quality, and while it is very evocative of times gone by, it also has the flavor of those times. I really enjoyed this.

Good one, Vince. WE still have an occasional freight train go by here in Saginaw, some long train carrying Dow Chemical stuff. When one goes by at night and I hear that eerie whistle I get nostalgia. Love, daver

This is the kind of nostalgia that just makes you sigh because for sure, it is not coming back. GREAT poem, Vince.

Oh this makes me think of the train tracks that ran close to my grandparent's house. I would listen to the sound at night, and dream of riding along......somewhere far and unknown. Lovely poem, Vince!
