EXAMPLE OF A CARPE DIEM POEM, USING THE WORD "LEKKER" ~ Su The world news has not changed since Biblical times War, famine, malcontents … Floods and fires of epic proportion had raked the earth Leaders, in general, were often *not LEKKER With the media blitz today, depression is now a global malady – Not a hollow in the ground or weather forecast jargon Switching the TV off is one way of avoiding reality! With a click of the button on my laptop I bring the world into my home I can access people around the globe People I otherwise never would have met or got to know well We share our trails and tribulations and love for all things beautiful I learn about other cultures through their eyes Appreciation of the diversity of our planet has taken hold It is **LEKKER to be alive in this technical age! *not LEKKER: Crazy, mad, unstable… **LEKKER: Great!

I have written poetry including French or Latin - not languages in common use here or elsewhere. I thought that it would be fun to learn a new word and at the same time write and Inspirational poem.....

The word is used by other groups in our country as well, but in their own language: "Ndi mandi" ( Ek is lekker).. .:-)

Yes, Andrea. As I said in my blog, it is all encompassing word and in regular use. I have even heard it on my overseas trip - used by people who have had contact with SA. Go for it! It is fun :-)

We have eleven official languages in SA. LEKKER is one word we all use and understand. It is shorthand for many phrases and very expressive.... ;-)

Why use the word "lekker"? Good question. Because it fits in everywhere and it has many nuances. Eg: I may be lekker stupid, but it is not lekker when people tell me that I am not lekker. (I may be very stupid, but it is not nice when people tell me that I am crazy.).... Love, Su

If I had to visit the USA, for example, I will learn a few phrases, such as: Putting gas in my car (although gas over here is something that we pass....) ;-) Learning new things on PS is past of the fun (I think). Love, Su
