About This Poem

Cold Fingers

I look out my window
No longer white and fluffy
The snow has turned a sickly gray
Much like my mood towards this season of death
Tired of dark clouds and cold winds
The birds are wise to abandon this desolate place
I dream of sunshine and blue sky
Running barefoot across green grass
Smelling the fresh scent of spring breezes
Lazy days of summer accompanied by young lovers
For now I am a prisoner in a cold land
Wrapped in my blanket staring out at the gray
Nothing seems to warm the coldness that has invaded my soul
Old man winter has stolen another day
I wait and I wait
Time seems to move in reverse
Is there any escape?
Yes
I go to my computer
Warm weather awaits me
Just a click a way
Visions of spring dance in my head
I can cheat on winter
Escape cold fingers
I can fly away to some exotic warm land
Run through Sun drenched waves
Drink umbrella drinks
I can follow those clever birds
I long for this escape
Just four hours away
I arrive at the airport bags in hand
Feeling oppromistic
Then comes a storm
Old man winter refuses to release his icy grip
I look out the airport window
The snow covered runway is pure white
All flights cancelled
A block of ice where my heart used to be
How I long for spring

And thus winter hits again, ouch! I found myself reading at a quicker pace when I thought things were turning around for you... I could feel the excitement. Harsh snow can really break down a person's motivation... but it's a good excuse to stay inside and read with a cup of hot tea. Congrats on your well deserved win!

I'm in the same boat Richard. I count the days to see the sun or hear a bird. I don't know which is worse, the awful heat of summer or the endless winter. You sure paint the dismal picture it truly is. Sorry about your trip! :)

Heading to Mexico in March, hopefully without a glitch.

Nice ending. I can't altogether say that I approve of disliking winter though; us farmer folk would likely die out were it not for the break in constant work. I'll forgive you because it was for a contest. :) There's a reason for every season. I think that the farther one is removed from the land, the less this makes sense. The ground needs a rest too.

I hear what you are saying, in fact I enjoy all the seasons, one of the blessings of living in Canada.

aww I was so excited for your escape and then that darned ol' winter took control again! I love this, I love the twist at the end (even though it's a sad twist) but hey once you reach the exotic land it will be even sweeter since you had to wait so long. Great poem, I bet it does great in the contest!
