About This Poem

VALENTINUS

Valentinus, Love’s sentinel,
who sanctified the heart’s free will,
and knew strength shuns not tenderness,
so enraptured hearts he would bless
and God’s plan he helped to fulfill.

Claudius, Love’s censorial,
denied his soldiers wedding thrills,
then proclaimed a good priest lawless...
Valentinus.

Yes, ancient lore, yet now couples
conquer midwinter’s endless chill
with crimson rose, a bold caress,
or words chosen for their sweetness,
True affection hidden until
Valentinus.

I forever search for something ordinary about anything you write and fail to find it---I will continue my wonderful yet fruitless journey.
