LET THE NORTH STAR GUIDE YOU
Southern slave
yearning for freedom
like birds in a cage,
rise to your feet,
be a northbound wayfarer.
Though the road
to the north is hostile-
and,sometimes,
you nurse the wish
to play Lot's wife-
no other road
known to man
leads you there.
As you head northwards
braving the journey's odds,
let the north star guide you
to the land
where you shall be
free at last,
free forever.
N.B. centuries ago, the north star
was believed to guide slaves
escaping from south of
United States to the north where
slavery wasalready abolished.
