In Honor of my Mother: 1969-2009
Your lies taught me
to be honest with others and myself
about who I am.
Your addiction taught me
to stay clean because of
the pain it causes others.
Your narcissism taught me
to embrace the flaws that
make me who I am.
Your negligence taught me
to show compassion and empathy
for others misfortunes.
Your neglect taught me
to raise myself and
become independent.
Your promiscuity taught me
to be careful with whom I love
and value lasting friendship over temporary pleasure.
Thank you,
for all the things I'm not,
and for everything I’ve become.
