Message In a Bottle

For many years we were told
Our world was going to end
Someone found a Mayan calendar
Destruction is around the bend.

I decided I would leave behind
A note to explain this and that
Of how our race got started
How we begot and begat.

I put a note in a bottle
Pushed the cork down tight
Hoping someone in the future
Knew how to read my write.

I gave it a lot of thought
Where to put this special note
I found a tree near the river
On its bank, an ancient boat.

Being I’m so curious
I looked into this craft
I found a large flat rock
Tied to a seat near the aft.

It had very strange markings
I could not make them out
I took it to a museum
To see what it was about.

The curator studied it
He laughed and finally said
If I read these ‘glyphics right
Those from our past are dead.

I’m sorry, he snickered...
But, there is something here I see
“It says: For years we were told
Soon our world will no longer be.

A Craftsman scribed a calendar
Destruction is around the bend.
I decided to leave a note
Before it came to an end.

Now it’s five years later
And I am still around
So I tied a vine to this note and boat
To anchor it safe and sound."

I have to post this also Mandy. Since reading your reply... I went back into this poem and reworked it. A poet's critiquing is never complete. However at times, one can critique too much, and it ends up to where it was in the beginning... YarnSpinner
