About This Poem

The Ostrich

What a curious bird
The ostrich
That when scared
Holds itself hostage
By burying its head
Within the ground
A myth of course
That some propound
It actually lies
prostrate and still
In either case
An easy kill

Rhyming animal poems are my very favorite type of poetry. My favorite poet is Ogden Nash. If you get a chance read his book "Under Water with Ogden Nash" It's a short book and very entertaining. Sending you soup mail

Thank you ilene. I took some poetic liberties. The Ostrich will run if it can. Though there are times when it does lie down. I chose the later because it makes for a much more humorous ending. Thanks for stopping by and for you wonderful comment.

Jon, This is a lot of fun. That's an interesting point of view on the last line. It was unexpected.

    I have never seen this.

Actually their first instinct is to run. They are very fast runners so in many cases they get away. They'll only lie flat on the ground as a last resort. I've not seen this either. I have only read about it.
