BEGGAR'S NIGHT OUT

BEGGAR'S NIGHT OUT

Could not save them
Could not save herself

What ease assists
Which ardent book
upon her shelf
Confines a clue

Which discovery
old or new
 Allows her sleep
 In haunted nights--
Serve fragrant rest
Dispels the sight--

Street kids devoid
Of legs or arms
seducing her
with begging charms.
Proud and rich
In compare
To other beggars
Whole and fair.

In beggar’s midst of muck
And grime
Is there found
a honey breath
of time
without stark pain--
hawks brutal cost
of who has less
and who has most

Do beggars find a place--
Sheltered sleep
That proffers solace
Dirt-damned
Cheap?
