About This Poem
Alone on a River
The picture on the wall depicted a man rowing a
Boat... staring at her intensely… her gaze was transfixed
She hated the picture as long as she could remember,
Ever since her father had brought it home, he won it
In a bet from a Chinaman…
He had EVIL eyes, a sly grin, she felt a cold sweat
every time she walked past it, she tried not to look,
But her vision was pulled towards it… she felt as if…
He wanted her!
She had had this dream before, now once more
As night time fell and darkness encircled the room,
Her fears returned.
All she could think of was… the picture…the evil it held
The fear it brought to her.
Suddenly she screamed, she felt hands around her neck
They were wet! She felt as if she was …drowning
struggling to breath she fought hard, kicking the night air!
Until…silence remained…
In the morning her bed was empty, sheets were water stained.
She was nowhere to be seen, except in the picture
Was the Chinaman and now a woman sat behind him…
