Coyote
Along a dark lonely highway
a coyote glides on by
I see the backdrop, the Vegas Strip
against the starry sky
The contrast hits me hard
We are the encroachers
Building our cities in her back yard
As I exit the highway I long to turn around
To linger in the beauty of the desert night I found
In the morning I go back to see what I can see
and there she is, this graceful coyote
standing, looking at me
She vanishes for a moment
Then emerges from her den
Three young pups behind her
I think I've made a friend
She fears not and niether do I
As we live out this day beneath the desert sky
I long to touch her
but I know its best to let her be
Its enough to know she and her pups are alive and wild and free
