THE VACANT SMILE
I spoke with her this morning
For just a little while,
Hoping for nothing more
Than the faint hint of a smile.
I watched her brush her greying hair
And apply cream upon her face,
She removed her silk pyjamas
Trimmed in off white lace.
She acted like I wasn't there
And really could care less,
It was almost like she was putting me
Through some awkward sort of test.
You and I have been through a lot
I raised my voice to her,
And we've always been the best of friends
We both know that for sure.
But you know that I am insecure
You've known it from the start,
You never gave me confidence
You never did your part.
I stared directly in her eyes
But somehow she did not see,
The face within the mirror
Didn't even smile at me....
