About This Poem
Ribbon Tied
And what do you know?
DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW HARD IT IS TO FIGHT WHEN
THOSE AROUND YOU BLAME YOU FOR YOUR WARS?!!!
Do you have any idea how hard it is to plummet your body and rise to find the strength within
when your body withers and betrayal beckons?
But that’s what she had to endure….
Flashback
Her struggles:
Pain coarsely wrapping itself round her heart
The doctor’s diagnosis having hit its mark
The instinctive denial springing from her lips
Her fights:
Consuming pills trying to curb the cancer’s appetite
Battling depression, despair and feelings of unworthiness
Struggling to keep her wits when her husband treacherously
turned to another.
Her determinations:
Going through chemo to give herself a fighting chance
Working despite pain to feed her offspring
Building memories and support groups to help others cope
Tying a pink ribbon as a symbol of hope, endurance
and survival
Lessons learnt
In a land where ‘fine’ is the only acceptable answer to
‘How are you today?’
In a land where cancer is classified among the ‘foreigners diseases’
In a land where counseling and support groups is an unheard
of concept
…
Those that endure and rise above their woes to
impact on others lives are those whose
lives we are fortunate
to have a share in.
Thank you for impacting my life.
For N.K., the one whose life cannot be summed up in words.
