My best friend as a child was John,
He was picked on by the other boys,
Which I thought was wrong,
But I would jump in the fray,
And defend him,
many times he ran to my side for protection.
And I never let him stand alone!
He had eczema on his knees
I thought that is why he was beaten and teased
This enraged me so I would fight for him
But when I hit 12 an older kid said to me
that John was black and different from us
And that was why the other boys made such a fuss
I was so angry at this I went bright red
He’s not black I said, what do you mean?
His skin they said: its black cant you see?
I couldn’t see it and I shouted them down and beat them back
Are you serious? You bully him coz you think he's black?
When I saw the truth I only fought harder
And my anger was a strength that none could conquer
When you fight for love you become empowered
and you see the ignorant as pathetic cowards
Of course my friend John had brown skin, and I often envied how good he looked
But black? And why be upset about that anyway
He was such a nice guy and he loved to play,
He turned everything into a joke and didn't hesitate to forgive
The best friend I ever had we played, laughed and lived!
When I was a kid I literally did not notice
and since that time I have not lost my color blindness
If you try to tell me that this person is different here
And that one there because of their skin
I will act like a man who cant hear a thing
If you try to have the conversation about the difference
I will ignore you as if you were one lost in madness
Brown man pink woman
Pink man brown woman
Brown man and pink man
Brown woman pink woman
Living loving together as to one’s preference
So that in years the question is not even noticed
of this difference of pink and brown!
