About This Poem

Like a Horse With a Carriage

Love goes with marriage Like a horse with a carriage. . . but what of the horse? The horse may lead the carriage, but often stumbles or dies. What of the carriage? It often falls apart or gets stuck in a rut. But how beautiful the horse and the carriage that endure! For SandyIvy Davis's Tanka - Love & Marriage Tanka Poetry Contest

I love the analogy here. There are so many nuances to consider. I will be pondering on this poem for some time to come. What a great write.

A deceased man named Frank who hailed from Hoboken, NJ sang about love and marriage going together like a horse and carriage. Your double tanka is a good write as usual Andrea.

Hey Andrea, you're right about the saying. I've just heard it in a Frank Sinatra song. No, I'd never heard the saying before. In my country it's easier to meet a lion than a horse(I've only seen a horse once in passing). Thanks for the heads up. I love this one!

I suppose the inner message is, marriage that endures is beautiful. I suppose that's possible but I'm sure no judge! :) Love Lizzie

Like the old song, Love and Marriage. Is that the title? I can't remember. After all, the song was popular around the mid 40s. Your poem, however, is much better than that old song. The last two lines are priceless. Love, daver

Andrea, this is beautiful! I mean it! But why come did you liken marriage to a horse and a carriage? You know a horse can move without the carriage but not the other way round, unless you meant the horse and the carriage to be one entity? And the horse stumbling and the carriage getting stuck in a rut? Aargh! You got my mind turming - which in itself is the essence of good poetry. Nice!

I like how you employ the horse and carriage as symbols of resilience Andrea, very clever, and very meaningful - reminds me not to foster grudges in relationships if you want them to prosper - pretty wise for a young woman - J.A.B. %

The horse and carraige should never die. It's always waiting for the next ride. Are you willing to take the ride?
