Unfortunately that is the way of Mental Health facilities in the 1960s and 1970s. Catatonic schizaphrenia was difficult to address and still can be. Most Mental Health facilities do not even look like a hospital or "asylum" anymore. Well done. Lee

Certainly is a serious matter and I think for the most part the way mind challenged people are treated has improved. You should never have been taken to see these conditions and they should not have been on display. Congratulations on being able to put it into words. Perhaps the memory will fade a little now. Congratulations on your win. Love, Joyce

This is truly serious, poignant and sad--so glad you shared these perfectly portrayed thoughts.

Mental illness, mental disease, and mental retardation are sad illnesses of human beings..We would think that things would be better today but some of the same conditions still exsist in homes and institutional settings..You would think that we would learn..Thanks for stopping by my blog..Sara

This is what poetry is supposed to be, it does not have to be always pretty and wonderful thoughts. a poem like this is the kind I enjoy seeing because you paint reality and like with my taste in art, I prefer the realists to the surrealists!! The descriptions are very good, Joann!

so well defined with your senses alive in every line, joann... an edgy piece; i can relate as one who had been in a place like :) wonderful!.. hugggs!

Joann this is a classic, a poem, so realistic, it hurts.

Not a pleasant poem to read, but you have described the reality of your surroundings reasonably well here.

Joann this is excellent work if the children have to live it we can certainly deal with reading it, no need to dilute the impact of the poem with the disclaimer..why not put it in the About the poem part. For this contest we WANT our VERY serious TOPICS to be felt aye? [what country was this? here?]Light & Love

You paint a dark picture. It is a part of life that many choose to ignore. You are bringing the darkness into light with your work here. Peace & Love Matthew Anish
