NOSTALGIA
To forget the past
Is to live as a
Tree without roots
To dwell on the past
Is as a tree that does not grow
Nostalgia for a forgotten
Supposed time of joy
Abounds it seems
The present is forever lambasted
And traduced
The future viewed with horror
So many with an intense emotional attachment
To another time
Ransack history for answers
The present always displeases
For its lack of any tangible
Connection with the past
To not pay homage to that great age
That time of prosperity
That time when we all got along
Is it seems amnesia gone too far
Are we to be stuck in the past
A sometime pseudo creation
Of a mind refusing to move on
Or accept what cannot often be undone
Or recreated?
To not forget
To imbibe one with good feelings
To connect
Is the aim of reminiscing
It is both an individual
And a collective endeavor
Society benefits when we all look back
And learn
The past must never be forgotten
Its story must at times be told
Lessons can be learned
But sadly almost never will
The pickling of a touch
A kiss
A good feeling
An intense yearning
Makes yesterday always present with today
We may forget the past
Yet the intense pressures
Of emotions of a previous time or state
Will eventually bubble to the surface
A sigh or a tear the advent
Of a step back in time
The recycle bin of the mind
Deletes only for a time
What horrors
What pains or
What regrets
That did enter our psyche
Will never truly be rid of
Unnecessary memories
Sometimes just refuse to melt away
Some can dwell in the now
And look to both the past and the future
Others can never exit
A state of mind that cannot
Contemplate the present or
Even want a future
We must not forget
We must not hesitate to remember
We must always think of today
Always wondering what the past
Can contribute to our future
Live in the present
Leaf through the pages of history
Expect the future
