I’ve hidden behind dumpsters, in alleys,
And under the schoolhouse steps
But Mr. Ted always finds me
And puts his hands up my dress,
While squeeze-squeezing my breasts

I would tell, but I want to live
And I’m afraid Sue Ellen’s dead
He used to give her his “gift”
Before he took me instead
And made me lick-lick his head

As I get older I’m pushing blades
Into my scarred up wrist
Somehow it makes the reality fade -
Cleanse- cleansing the dirtiness
Of his eyes, his words, his fists…

With a little more bleeding, I could be free
And sailing towards the sky
Never to see or feel his need
Poke-poking me against my thigh -
Thighs of steel are a lie

Would anyone miss me if I died?
Would anyone care besides Ted?
Would Mommy finally acknowledge the lies
Bleed-bleeding the water bright red?
Or would she again, bury her head?

Holy, man, Susan, I am so sorry I took so long to get here. Hun, you gutted me. This is art in every sense of the word. This has the quality of Sylvia Plath. I'm not crappin' ya. The repetition gives it the blade thrust, the childish sing-song mingling with the horrid reality. I'll be posting my blog tonight, soup newsletter, about poems that Kill us softly. I could have used yours as a prime example. Gold worthy. If you had put it into my contest, I would have caused grumbles by placing it high

Susan, I know you like that red for the title. but I still think something else would be better. Maybe just simply "bleeding" or "Bleed Bleeding" Since she is bleeding emotionally as well as physically. WOuld Ted be like a stepdad or something. I don't remember when I first saw this that you mentioned a sue ellen having disappeared. Sounds so ominous!

p.s. sorry but I don't like the title, to me it sounds like your are 'ready ' to accept it, twisted bastard is what I would have called it...fight back with words that is your sword....

susan, wow, this is a powerful poem. It makes me wonder sometimes why you always like to write these kinds of poems about the worst in society, for I know you have a very nice life. But someone needs to tell the horrors of the world and you do it so well. Very nicely crafted poem. I got your title's meaning but I was colored by your hints at the bottom. So maybe I would not have gotten it on my own. Unless the girl's name is also Reddy, I would call it something else. Luv, Andrea

Susan - The height of despair is what is written here. The first and last stanzas are heart wrenching. Such a hard-hitting piece - you've written it so well. Frankly, I didn't get the title; I thought of Helen Reddy the singer. I don't know what title could prepare the reading for what's to come. Great great poem. love, Kathy
