The bad

Once did travel by a road
could not stand the heavy load
put my sack down by the way
sat beside it to hear him say

'Why do you travel this way so weary
I can offer you a life less dreary
what is it that you ask of me
give yourself and you will see.'

gave a life and life did alter
walked alone and did not falter
until the day he came to call
and stripped me bare to take it all

he laughed at my attempts to run
called me foolish - 'my only one'
so much pain and sorrow followed
now I could see what I had swallowed

darkness, lies and pain all 'round
sanity nowhere to be found
a blood filled cup of fools magic
it really was all quite tragic...

The Good

...how dark it is before the dawn
new hope becomes of being reborn
so it is the way of sinners
by Gods grace they can be winners

a helping hand passed my way
a drowning man could not stay
took the hand offered to me
and the great I turned into we

shown the way to stand up tall
and to get back up after a fall
to lend a hand to my brother
and love my sister as my other

with new eyes is the road head
with renewed soul thy can be led
with new ears thy can now hear
that gentle voice without new fear

I have a heart to feel new love
I have the strength given from above
I have the promise from those before me
stick together - we'll always be

Lovely poem and message. And to answer your question "what is infectious?" The abyss for the narrator is a metaphor for what people call depression or evils, but I leave it to the reader to decide what really is the abyss.

Thanks Luis. An abyss for me is a black hole - in mind, spirit and body.
