I heard her calling from deep in the wind,
From someplace too far away.
A muffled voice, some shapeless words-
What was it she was trying to say?
I turned my head and strained to hear,
But her words were a jumble of sound.
They were tossed about like the dying leaves
That carelessly blew on the ground.
I gave up listening and started away,
But paused once more in my track.
I heard again- or so I thought-
What could have been “Please, come back!”
But those words too, were quickly lost
As the wind gave them formless flight.
They were stolen away in the autumn air
And disappeared in the encroaching night.
