In A Heartbeat
One space, one beat, a pause… then life,
Anticipating, waiting, wondering,
One pulse marking, time, a single possibility,
A second, a clock hands tick and tock.
Borrowed time, a debt, a running tab,
A glass filled, brimming and sipped, enjoyed, savored,
One round, one potent, intoxicating round,
Non refillable, none refundable.
Drink deeply or live drop by drop,
The final docket, the tally to be paid,
When the toast has been raised,
A balance on life’s ledger, red or black?
