The Dancing Night

Four boys
Under clear Arkansas sky
Lazing on a hillside
Dreaming dawn is nigh

Many years ago it was
But I remember it still
How could I forget?
What I saw...upon that hill

Something strange it seemed
Was weaving through the stars
Our boyish minds were fearing
This strange thing was from Mars

It came so close
A mile or two away
Then flickered out, and reappeared
But still, it would not stay

We stared in disbelief
At the dancing lights
And not a word was spoken
For the entire night

But we all knew...just what it was
When it left upon the winds
And told each other with
Silence...between friends

I had a very similar experience while camping as a kid. You describe it so well here! I miss being a kid and spending so much time outdoors. Have fun this weekend! Again - your world is so different from mine haha :)

Caleb, this brings to my mind a time I visited Alabama with my best friend and I met her older cousin and we double dated. Near the cemetery on a big hill we saw strange dancing lights too. I wonder what they can be. These things stay in our minds and later, we can write of them in our poetry. So nice!

A shared memory makes a great theme for a poem.
