My friends, love is better than anger.
Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better
than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful
and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.
All my very best,
(From Jack Layton's last letter to Canadian, written
on his death bed)
Jack the good heard Heaven’s summons,
Rose above the House of Commons,
Goons in suits evade and glower,
Knowing Stephen’s heading lower.
*Dedicated to Jack Layton (1950 – 2011)
About this Poem and Jack Layton
Jack was the leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada and many considered him the real “Mr Smith Goes to Washington.” He was a respected politician. He rode a bicycle, believed in the environment and had both integrity and charisma. He became the official leader for the opposition on May 18, 2011 and passed away from cancer August 22, 2011. Our prime minister, Stephen Harper, has made questionable decisions, including Toronto’s lockdown during the G20 summit. Hundreds of innocent people who were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time were locked in holding cells and subjected to brutality. Canada was in shock. We are NOT a police state…
