FRIENDSHIP

What is the strange and mystic thing
That makes a friend, a friend?
What makes the hours go racing by
And all our thoughts to blend?

Is this a gift from God, alone?
Or, man’s own clever design?
Who decided in life’s unwinding
That this friend should be mine?

Who knows what cosmic fusion
Or coincidental feats
Have merged to fix the moments
When spirit with spirit meets?

Surely, such rich fulfillment
Could never be wrought by man!
No, friendship’s magic, I’m sure must be
A part of God’s might plan.
