My Saturday Evening Post

I never dreamt I’d be standing in the same room with you today, Norman
It was purely a last minute mother and daughter date
It turned out to be one of the most nostalgic afternoons of my life
Here you were in little Dayton
Your artwork had completely redecorated the walls of my hometown

You showed us an era when innocence was golden
It had value
A reward was a piece of chocolate pie and a smile
Fun was a picnic lunch, going fishing, or swimming at the water hole
Disappointment was sneaking through father’s bureau drawers
and discovering he was Santa Claus

What about the policeman chatting with the little boy at the ice cream parlor
Or the class writing Happy Birthday to Miss Jones in chalk
You were my favorite artist, illustrator, poet, and friend, Norman…
Those were the days
Where has the innocence gone?

My mom has most of his statute and figures as well as decorative plates. I always loved the warm feeling from all the scenes. My favorite one is Norman painting his own portrait. Great write from a great poet. Your comments on my blog made me smile. Thank you and I want to wish you a Merry Christmas and happy new year. Love and hugs Michael

Amen. When I was a kid, I had a job selling the Saturday Evening Post. I had a bag which I slung over my shoulder and went door to door. Those were tough times 1935 and on. Norman took a little of the sting out. I like your poem mucho. daver

Great job. Norman Rockwell was a great arist that saw life as it was and captured it as a moment in time. Oh for the days of yore when times were simpler. Thanks for the memories Gwen. Rockman

Gwen, killing two birds with one stone, I see, and you just might have a bull's eye with both!! This is very enjoyable. I love his artwork too. I have a calendar that has each month represented by his work and I use those pictures to spur creative writing! I hope you win in at least one of the contests.
