the porch light is off
there is no jack-o-lantern
drapes shield heart from night
halloween kills her
sweet son hit by car
lawn holds well lit sign:
DRIVE SLOW! ANGELS ARE WALKING!
MINE’S IN HEAVEN NOW!
parents pause, wipe eyes
then hold tiny hands tighter
dark thoughts terrify
no ghost or monster
no scream, costume or scarecrow
could frighten them more

This from the article Real Horror of Halloween By Liz Szabo, USA TODAY, “Kids face real dangers on Halloween night, but not from ghosts. Children are more than twice as likely to be killed by a car while walking on Halloween than any other night of the year, according to Safe Kids USA.”
Please, let’s drive safely, folks. Children are precious.
