Emily Carr: Haida Totems

You must be absolutely honest and true in the depicting of a totem, for meaning is
 attached to every line.

                                                                                                Emily Carr
                                                                                               1871-1945

When oil met wood the totem sighed,
Then her lush brush wed land to sky,
Canvas pulsed with nature’s heart,
Spirit bonding man, love and art.
Emily made the forest fly.

Cedar carved from a warrior’s cry,
So tall and proud, tales held up high,
While she transposed that story’s start.
            …When oil met wood

Colours mixed by a truthful eye,
Life’s wisdom in her palette lies,
Those clouds wrenched our still view apart.
Her small grave plaque, we should dispart,
A stained easel should death’s door pry!
            …When oil met wood

NOTE
Emily Carr is buried at the Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria. She is considered a
Canadian icon and is a member of the Group of Seven, yet her grave consists of
a simple plaque. The grave would have been left unmarked, except for the ‘foresight’
of the Victoria Historical Society of 1963. Emily gets so many visitors that the ground
where she is interred is frequently covered by sketches and flowers, and – because
Emily was also an avid, skilled writer- pens and poems.

She is most recognized for her paintings of totems.
