Ever since I was a young lad
When I had this close encounter
With the wildflower, Celadine…
I’ll never forget the first time
I laid eyes on that pretty thing;
I guess it was its bright yellow
Tiny petals that caught my eye;
But the lasting impact on me
Was when I plucked this dainty thing
From its home-it began to bleed!
I thought, gee! It bleeds just like me
That’s when the orange blood stained my hand
Leaving its indelible mark
On my adolescent psyche.
Oh, Swallow Wort!
Fear not injury again
By these aged hands.
