Halley's Comet

Every 75 years we see

it gliding over our dear

planet Earth, as you watch

it, we know that we may never

see it again.

It was named after astronomer

Edward Halley (1656-1742)

One man was born as Halley's

comet was passing our beautiful

Earth one night in 1835.

During his life time he wrote

some of the world's greatest

novels ever written.

His trips down the Mississippi

as a river captain inspired him

to write some great novels.

This man from Missouri knew

his subject's very well,

75 years after he was born

Halley's Comet paid us

another visit, that day also

saw the death of this great

writer who we all know as

Mark Twain.

Great one that inspired my spirit...I have read several of Mark Twain's works to my children when they were around second or third grade..I also read some to classrooms of children a chapter a day..Thanks for stopping by, reading, and commenting on my work..I enter some contests but not all of them..Right now it is not easy for me to write..It takes a very special effort to get it done..Thanks again..Sara

Wow, I had no idea, James. But Mark Twain is one of America's best humorists. A coincidence? Perhaps. But maybe there's more too this link. THIS is my kind of poem! My physical therapist says I shouldn't spend much time sitting at a computer and I didn't want you to think I was ignoring you. Getting well just takes priority now. Four weeks of PT and maybe it'll help the 10 bulging discs that are pinching nerves. Love, Carolyn

Lovely informative write, James - I loved Tom Sawyer's adventures as a kid and didn't know about Twain and the comet - how strange! I only knew of the comet and the Battle of Hastings (over here).
