Evening Passing

Lady Evening lingers still,
And makes her way across the clouds;
Her starry dress of silver-white
Now caught between the trees that bow

She flies with slow retreating love,
Half glancing back to halt the day,
Although the cold embrace of night
She knows cannot much longer stay

Soon through the forest she will pass,
Descending to a frozen sleep,
And there her pallid frame will lie
Where snowy evergreens grow deep.
