THE GREY AREA

I saw the tears in her eyes,
Not because she was crying,
But an imprint,
From a hundred cries before.

A single mom,
Doing the best she could,
But she was far,
From evening life's score.

Her speech was slurred,
Probably from,
One too many drinks,
Drowning her sorrows away.

I almost,
Overlooked her completely,
Cause I couldn't,
Understand the words she had to say.

I could of ignored her,
Told her,
She wasn't welcome,
Cause I had no time to waste

But she had with her,
Her son,
Who despite being a bit embarrassed,
Did his best to explain her case.

So I decided to hear her out,
And despite my skeptic thoughts,
I decided,
To give her a chance.

Something about her appearance,
Told me she needed a break,
From people telling her,
There excuses for can'ts

The next month,
She came back,
Bright an early,
Ready to honor our deal,

I was encouraged,
Thinking how misleading,
Prejudices were,
From that which is real.

Here she was,
A good mom,
Just trying to give,
Her son something better,

And I almost,
Made her life harder,
By believing my misconceptions,
To the letter.

I learned a valuable lesson,
That day
You can't judge a book,
By it's cover.

And sometimes,
It's hard to tell the difference,
From a fall down drunk,
And an ill fortuned good mother.

Any mother who tries to go it alone wins my admiration, Jose. If they put their children first, there is no one looking out for the mother herself. I'm glad you took the time to get to know her. We often make the mistake of judging people based on first impressions that turn out to be misleading. A "footle" is a four syllable poem. Two one-syllable words on each of two lines and the lines rhyme. A member here named Brian Strand introduced the form to us. Love and blessings, Carolyn

Hi Jose.I like this very much. It's very readable, love the rhyming and it has a strong message to us all. We're all judgemental at times not allowing for human weaknesses yet we all have them. Many times we only go by what we see and not the truth that we need to look for.where every picture tells a story like the mother in your poem. Some people end up in the gutter not because they put themselves there but life did.But it's people like you inspire others to help them up.Thank you Love June(Sylvia)
