Ladder of Succesion

The animals know
When to fear, flee, die
Most have the smarts that escape you and I

When the people ascended, far short of the sky
And tried themselves, rescue from what they denied
The animals everywhere knew where to go
To ensure at least two each would stay and survive

We try to akin to the snakes and the swine
And turn from the laws they don’t have to abide
Truth is: survival is not our goal

It is no struggle for us
To do what they must
We roll through diseases, disaster, bloodlust

No- we can do much better than this
We have instinct…we ignore it
So something’s amiss
A crucial misplaced
Nucleotide base
-A great parti pris!

But that day, it was as if
As those self-reliant
Got in skiffs
Or climbed cliffs
The few of the many
And creatures in plenty
Followed logic not their own
And hence got a lift

The people all thought
That they knew this Race
Scrambling like spiders to reach a high place
We do here today, to claim our own “my” space

I go to Brown, West Point, Notre-Dame
Or
I park my bike at community Maine
Both
To learn how to step,
Past the rest
Be the best
Or you won’t be:
Selected,
Connected,
Elected,
Respected,

A natural selection we strive to attest

Although most of us can agree
Our bodies have stopped evolving
Did they? Have they? Well, they’re doing it now

We see it and buy it
So our eyes are shrinking

We hear and repeat it
So we listen far less

With our ears finely tuned
To only our tunes

They’ve changed to ignore
What the lyrics express

Our brains are a laugh
We know not a pin head,

Except those that tell us,
What to do and what’s true

We shut out Real Science
And Genuine Faith

For paid-off, propagated “research,”
And tepid religious spew

Speaking of culture:

We fabricate laws,
We abate our intention
We sedate our flaws,
And we bait contravention
So adaptation
Has become conformation

Nature’s not something humans invent,
And yet seems our nature to it circumvent,

So the point is
That Truth is:
Survival is
Not our goal

This I could try to
Express this to you

But who is really thirsting for WHY anymore?

And oh the things I could tell you
If it wasn’t like explaining life to

Something dumber than an animal

Unabashed and relentless truths here- an enthralling read- I made my poem `blank`- thank you so much- I didn't know the diff- I don't even read free verse unless I am tempting my friend who won't let it go- Yep- P.D.

I agree with Max. Not only is there great depth in this poem, but it teases our sense of natural order to just the right extent. But as for your question, there are some of us still "thirsting" for answers we may never find. Excellent, thought-provoking poem that's in a class of its own, Deneith. Best wishes, Carolyn
