The Tea Party For Emily

(a challenge that was based on using ten given words)

The old folks at the home, and none at all
of them too fleet of foot in their last years,
came shuffling, some with walkers, down the hall,
including those with aids pressed in their ears.

Then one (whose punctured lung had not healed well)
was wheeled in; she had just turned ninety-three!
They'd all come (when the nurse had rung the bell),
for what was now to be revealed: a "Tea!"

The English lady wheeled in never knew
what they were planning as she lay in bed.
They'd stamped the name of "Emily" onto
The sparkling crown which now lay on her head.

With cake crumbs on her chin, in pure delight,
She sipped the tea they'd sweetened up just right!

Very sweet image of this elderly woman, Andrea. My father was 93 when he died last year, but thankfully he hadn't suffered the pain of a punctured lung. I have a soft spot for seniors. Love, Carolyn

Hard to tell what fantasies go through the young mind these days. Romance doesn't seem to be something mystic. Too much reality I suppose. Does the "Smoke get in their eyes?" Love, Dave

Fabulous Sonnet! Really beautiful. I could just see the lady with the cake crumbs on her chin and sipping her tea. This was a joy to read.

Been there, done most of that. Although Emily is my senior by a few years. Love the humor you get into the poem so well. My "Love Stories" I wrote to music, music you probably are not familiar with. I did them at a single sitting - took about half-an-hour. Pure romantic - and I mean, like, the 1930s - stuff. Hey! This is my age coming out. Love, Dave
