Angels Above

Angels Above
A. W. Nutter

At fifteen, I was to young to become a father
At fourteen, she didn’t need to be a mother
We were old enough to have sexual relations
Unable to understand the implications

We cried out in anguish to the angels above
Pleading for their mercy and their love

Parents abusing us for this sinful union
Adolescents fearful and full of confusion
Not able to cope with the adult pressure
The mothers young body goes into labor

We cried out in anguish to the angels above
Pleading for their mercy and their love

My son struggled between life and death
I held his hand as he took his last breath
From my hands his little body was pried
The tears falling like rain from my eyes

We cried out in anguish to the angels above
Pleading for their mercy and their love.

Occasionally the mother and my path will cross
Seldom do we mention or discuss our loss
But every year at nine, on the sixteenth of May
We both agreed, to light a candle and silently pray

To the angels watching from heaven above
Shower our son with mercy, show him your love

between the angels above and the demons below we have to struggle in this purgatorial prison called life...stretched into nothing

Oh wow, Anthony, I have to tell you, I literally got chills as I read this--I could just feel the emotions and grief across your words and it literally moved me--the repetition of your couplet with the angels was very effective and take comfort in knowing that you have your very own angel watching over you--God bless you!

Very touching tribute. I lost a baby and a brother at 19, but I had a baby already, then another at 20, another at 22. Now I have 5 grandchildren. Both my daughters lost a baby, my youngest two and now she has 3 children. My son has 2 boys, one adopted. Your boy is in Heaven, I'm sure. Ellen

This certainly is a beautiful piece about the most important of subjects. So very well done and thank you for bringing it to the forefront. These babies are living souls now with the Father of all. Many do not see that.

I all too well know your pain, Anthony. I pray that by my reading this winning entry in Constance's contest, It has helped lessen your pain. I find writing about it can be a very powerful medicine. I currently am liberating myself from the past through a book I am writing 'A memoir of Roses and Thorns'. Much love, Lainie

It's hard to find the right words to say about this. Its so hard for me to deal with death. You should know that it takes a great deal of strength to write so openly about your loss, that what makes this write so beautiful. great great work

That actually hurt really good, what a beautiful story. I guess you can tell i am somewhat of an emotional masochist, reading others pain, heals mine.
