Toys of Our Memories

Standing at the closet door
buried deep within my mind
I gather courage to venture there
to see what’s left behind

As the door swings gently open
so many things I see
the rainbows of illusions
and so many shattered dreams

But in the corner hiding
is a memory soft and gay
it pulls me closer to the spot
where I used to play

The place of innocence, the inner child
yearning to be free
laughing, singing, trusting all
Come and play with me

and further in the darkness
there’s a light from loves I knew
from family, friends and lovers
all still burning true

But the brightest toy to catch my eye
is one of innocence
it’s the gift you gave when first we met
and sealed it with a kiss

I love the way you build suspense in the beginning and then allow us to journey back with you into your childhood. The last verse is outstanding! Excellent poem, Trudy! Love, Carolyn
