Alone in a Hospital Room - An Alzheimer’s Song

Don’t you remember, love, how we danced that first night;
beneath the sun’s rays, toes dipping in the cooling sand,
to the tune of our favorite song –
with me humming the best I could –
(I sounded terrible, but you told me I sounded divine, remember?)
while falling all over myself, and your delicate feet;
and you, trying so hard not to laugh as I made such a fool of myself!
Did you ever think we would go
from being love-sick teenagers dancing on the beach,
to a couple of old-timers reminiscing
about our best years – our long ago days together?

Honey?
Sweetheart, please…
If there is any part of that teenage girl
left within that beautiful head of yours…please;
please, just look in my eyes as you once did…
look at me, sweetheart…
Don’t you remember?

My love, do you hear?
They’re playing our favorite song…

    Awesome - very touching poem. I appreciate the feelings expressed. It appears you have not posted any poem for last two years, Kristin. There must be a reason for such long absence. Please let the family of PoetrySoup know. Love. -Mohammad

    Kristin, Memory loss is a devastating experience... on both sides... or maybe just on the intact thoughts. But there are good sides of it. Every day is a new day. Every pain is gone forever. Every moment can be joyful (or not if alone...) This is a sad poem. A premature loss that leaves loved ones alone before... Love to you. Where have you been Kristin? (soup mail) Lovingly, Dane Ann

    Soulful. Reminds me of Leonard Cohen's "Dance Me Till the End of Love," but yours is a lot lighter in tone.

    "Hope you did it right? Kristin, how could you ever do anything wrong? I'm getting caught up on communicating. How are you? I've been rewriting a novel and so am not able, with my lousy eye sight, to read everybody. I see you're not posting as much as usual. What are you doing with that enormous talent? Love, daver

    Wonderfully described reflection upon such an unfortunate illness~As only few such as "Yourself" can do~For I could feel "Your Precious Heart & Soul" within every word!!:)~Yet luckily for "You & Your Husband," you have many more years to gather in, before ever having to worry about such as this sorrows befalling!!? "Beautifully Penned & Expressed Emotions Kristin!!":)~"As Always, Love & Warmth To 'You All,' John!!":) ~

    Well you did it right from my vantage point ... smile ... awesome tribute to a subject that may touch us all !! When I lose things or forget names my heart freezes in horror of this disease. I do lots and lots of crossword puzzles and sudoku in the hope it will stave off what I never want to experience. Wonderful writing here, Kristin!!

    This is a great poem of free-floating verse. I like the way that the narrative doesn't attempt to emote the reader but takes us into an experience. I wish more writers would realise that poetry is about finding your own way as the reader. This is a brilliant poem whether you 'did it right' or not

    I have no idea if it is done right because I do not under the contest :( However, your poem is wonderful, and very sad, like a scene in a movie. Good luck! Love, Shar
