Traffic Stop

Driving down the road,
I bring my unit to a stop.
A speeding violation,
A typical day as a cop.

As I exit my unit,
Random shots pierce the night.
I take cover behind my car,
And put him in my sights.

Two shots leave my weapon,
Striking him in his chest.
I looked down at my body,
And took one in my vest.

There’s no such thing as routine,
In the life of a cop.
‘Cause one can lose his life,
In any random stop.

You are so right. The job of a police officer is very dangerous. Your poem is very good. Welcome to Poetry Soup.

You have a tremendous talent for storytelling, Tyler! And, sadly, there is much truth in that last verse. I had a neighbor who forgot to wear his vest while on duty one morning. He became the first officer shot in the line of duty in Tallahassee. Indeed, life can be lost "In any random stop." Great work! Love, Carolyn

Wow, chilling anecdote, Tyler! Thanks for giving us a chance to walk in your boots to envision the more random aspects of the job: nothing proves routine. When can you let your guard down, then? Warm regards, John.
