Nothing More Than A Dream

The young boy had just finished shopping
for his grandma,
he didn’t mind doing it, and that she knew,
it was something she’d normally do,
he was a sweet grandson, and she knew that too,
he stopped at the corner and looked both ways,
cars come, he stays,
it was how he was taught, and grandma never plays,
then shots were fired, bullets in the air,
people ducking with caution and fear,
he was alone, and that was clear,
a young girl next to him went down,
very hard, she hit the ground,
but she was still breathing,
thank God for that,
others crawling to safety like injured rats,
after battling hungry cats,
his piece of the corner seemed to shimmer,
around him, everything grew dimmer,
there was a lonely simmer,
brewing, stewing,
inside,
then in an instant, his life vanished
as if it had been nothing more than a dream,
and lastly, while sitting on the porch,
Grandma heard a scream.

That was sad, and far too frequent in this world of war. I liked the random rhyme peppering the story.... Thanks for your comments on the Haibun, it was my first attempt at one.

very well written piece. It is true life can change in an instant. Unfortunately this action of humanity happens quite frequently. It is best for us to always put our best foot forward for we never know when those steps may be our last! Thank you for this thought provoking piece that you have shared here and appologies for me not reading you sooner. Lots of love, Lucinda

Hi Frank - Life is often something we all take for granted - The reality of is that none of us are promised more than right now - just as your poem states life can be taken in the wink of an eye - I watched my mother drown when I was four so this simple fact of fate made me realize that we should live each moment of our lives like it is the last - My problem was that I lived it the wrong way - Now it is all good - loved your poem, God Bless, MJ

Wow Frank... this is awesome. I felt a touch of Ghost Whisperer as well, for me it really drove the message home. You have a wonderful flair for dramatic verse, telling the story in a way that it touches the reader's heart and never leaves. Thank you for your sweet comments on my stormy poem. :) Amy

Frank, there's such a harsh reality to this piece. I remember a time I had come out of a bar in Staten Island (I grew up there in NY) and boom, boom, bullets were flying by me, it was a shootout. I never jumped down so fast. This however, brings tears for my thoughts go to the family, the grandmother. You write with such detail and heart. Michael
