Confessions of an Insomniac

In the wee small hours of the morning
When sleep will not oblige itself to come
One thought leads to another and yet another
And my brain will not surrender deliberation
Until morning

Emotions so fickle when the shadows of night
Permeate my bedroom
Thoughts during the day that gave comfort
Left for morose surrogates
Am I awake for a reason

Do I busy myself so during the day
That your only alternative is to bide your time
Until the house is quiet and I cannot escape
You have my full attention
Let the games begin

I can relate to this one. No fun when one lays awake hoping for sleep to come. Keep on writing. Thank you for taking time to comment on my poem. Karen

Dear Laurie, this struck a painful chord with me. I have had a sleep disorder all of my life, and you capture well the thoughts that race through our head ("Emotions so fickle") when we are trying to put aside painful memories and fall asleep. The recent loss of my father has left me sleeping only a few hours each night, if that. Very provocative poetry! Love, Carolyn

Awesome write, Laurie! I, like everyone else here can relate to this so well. Sleep evades me but I like the quiet of the night, when thoughts aren't poking at me too hard., I enjoyed this. Well said, my friend. Love, Robin

Awesome write hitting the nail on the head for those of us who suffer. Yes, it truly is like we are captured by the night and it's silence for our brain to be so non-stop and loud! Sorry, I too can relate. Get some rest. But then, if you do, and you are like me, you won't be able to sleep tonight again! Good luck dear friend. Love, Shar

I love this one, and unfortunately can totally relate. What is it with us poets, that our brain never shuts off? Sheesh..LOL LOVE the last five lines. Love Christie
