My Father

He's dying now
Cancer eating away his stomach
Kidneys failing and the Chemo
taking it's time with everything
else taking it's sweet time
My five year old daughter asks me:
"Daddy! Where's grandpa?"
and i feel the tears pushing
into my face before i answer:
"He's working, Baby.
He'll be home later." Then i go
to the bathroom
lock the door
sit on the floor and push my face
into my palms... My father is dying
and i can't do a damned thing
i can't take his place
i can't sleep
eat
enjoy my wife
I can't find peace in poetry
He looks at me he can't talk because
there's a hose in his mouth
trying to help him breath
and through his eyes
i can see he loves me
i can touch his hand
hug him kiss his forehead
but the one thing i wish what i pray
for i have no power over
i can't save his life
i don't have enough hope
GOD DAMNED ME!!!!!
I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH
HOPE.

Raw power that speaks to the powerful mortality we all must face with others and our own. You've captured the horror, the mystery and anger of grief my friend and we can only guess at the meaning of it all. Wonderful writing which I hope was cathartic in some way and I'm glad Michael selected it as a winner in his contest.

I know what it's like to lose someone...to lose hope...to lose faith. It's a tough, lonely place to be. My prayers are with you, Joseph. Donna G.

the hard things in life are for us to learn to understand. death is a part of life and a part of the next life. moving on is the reward. time is the tool God uses to drag us away and we must go away from this evil world or evil will always exist. john

I know this devastating situation that you write of, and I am so sorry for what you are going through. For a full year, a year of pure hell, my mother suffered every day in every possible way. One thing after the other, until at the end, her pain was so unbearable, I prayed for God to take her. How could I do that? Helpless, is a horrible way to feel, watching your loved one suffer. It is agonizing. My heart and prayers go out to you. Hug your daughter more, she will help you. Love, Shar

This is pure power and emotions my friend. The poem hits close to home for me because I lived through this moment as a twenty one year old, not being able to focus on school, life, just filled with fear of the news. I know the voice in this piece speaks with pain, and although the pain will never go away competely it will get less. The poem is very strong..the moments with the daughter is strong, tears pushing powerful, bathroom floor..extraordinary..great piece..I will pray.
