Sleepless Winter Night

The wind blows hard-
Waking me from sleep.
Smiles turn to scowls,
Love to mistrust.

I want to hold on tight,
instead I inch away.
I try-
My love is not enough.

Years have passed
And tears I’ve cried.
Lives created
Yet I’m still a child.

I want to pour
Splash to the ground
My soul.
Instead I cry- alone
(I lend my foot,
barely touching yours)

And though you take
You never really have.
I begin to quit
when I’d rather give in.

All the while recollecting days…
I would fall into your arms-
rain on hot asphalt and melt.
Love was a word that counted-
too miniscule to explain how I felt.

Now,
Here you shatter.
A million tiny shards of glass,
for me to sort and place.
I pick, my fingers bloody.
My options slim.

You think certainty rests in my hands.
But tell me how,
when my love is not enough?
