The Last Leaf

All through that long September
as seasons were arranged,
I marveled at the wonder
of how her colors changed.

It was about the time when
most other leaves would fall,
she stood up through the rain storm,
ignoring harsh winds' call.

She trembled through October,
but still would not let go.
I wondered why she lingered
through crisp November's snow.

It wasn't 'til December,
one frosty cold weekday,
she'd had enough of winter,
shook loose then flew away!

A great use of metaphor in this. the rhyme adds to the pathos of the narration and creates a lovely sound world. the flow of the poem is great and nothing comes over as being forced. like the theme, the narrative has a nature of its own.

What a lovely reflective write for thought dear~"Hello Celeste, it is good to make your acquanaince dear!~I wonder why she held on so long? And where was she going when she finally flew away? Its amazing, words can possibly project, within anothers eyes!? But only your eyes, hold the true story? And, there is 'always' a story!~"God Bless You & All You Love, Always, John!:)

Wow..this is superb. Nicely personified. A beautiful poem reflecting the change of seasons and the tree as aware and ready to fight. Loved it!! This made me remember a tree we had in the front yard of our house. It would certainly stand still till December. Love, Chitra
