Just A Plain Rock

It was just a plain rock
Nothing more,
But its smooth roundness
I just couldn’t ignore.

It caught my eye
Lying there in the sand,
Among the thousands of rocks
Covering the shore land.

It wasn’t very big
It fit in the palm of my hand,
It boasts no beauty
To make it something grand.

For some reason though
I couldn’t throw it down,
It cast a spell on me
As I knelt on the ground.

My fingers slowly traced
Its smooth round shape,
And I couldn’t help wonder
About it’s past date.

Had it traveled far
Only to land here today,
If it could talk
What stories would it say.

How many other people
Had felt its weight,
How long had the river
Dictated its fate.

It was just a plain rock
As far as I could see,
But its simple existence
Inspired me.
