At the Darkest Time

At the darkest time On the darkest day, You took my hand, You took me to play. I thought it strange, I thought it wise That there in the wood The secret lies. But then I saw it The flicker of light, The sound of birds As they took to their flight. The ray of sunshine Filled your eyes, Around us filled With silent lies. My smile was met From cheek to cheek, Your hand around mine As your eyes grew weak. I see your face Amongst the light, The day that soon Transformed to night. I’m alone now And alone I’ll stay Till the moon flips over And the sky turns grey. But the hand that took, Took me to play, Is there by my heart And there it will stay.

This Land Is My Land

This Land is My Land Ee, by gum, have you seen this place? How things have changed since the good old days! This land was meant for the workers pace, The rolling hills and the farmers’ ways. An industrial city in the heart of the land, The people still strong in spirit and mind, Wheere ther’s muck, ther’s brass for that waiting hand, ‘Ey up, in Yorkshire, that’s what you’ll find. A poem by Jessica Howell For the competition- MY LAND IS MY HOME by ~SKAT~

Life Beyond You

Life Beyond You. At the core of my heart, where the air is cool And the pieces formed have slowly parted, Lies the innocence used as your only tool Since the day when your hunger started. I remember the day our lives began, Cocooned in a silver cloud, But I knew I was right when I turned and ran, Our dreams, burned in a shroud. I tried to think what I did wrong Or whether it was even me, But your hate was as fierce as the day is long- The day when you set me free. A blow to the head would have been quite tough Or a bullet through the chest, But the way you killed me was just enough To lay me down to rest. How clever you were! I remember thinking When you dismissed every word that they said, But the evidence was clear, and your life was sinking, Whilst I slept silent in an eternal bed. But as I watch you now, with your head held high Smothering your face in a grin, I make my way forward with a smile and a sigh And I know you cannot win. For I know your greatest fear of all Of which you cannot see. Your life, my dear, is due to fall, And waiting there is me.

The Waiting Game

Waiting for the rain to go or the sun to come, or the clouds to go or the car to come, or the fear to go or the phone to ring, or the heart to know or waiting around for your love to grow or waiting for his fear to go. Everyone is just waiting. Waiting for the endless night or waiting for the endless fight or waiting around for your delight or waiting, perhaps, for my heartbreak or a cry of help, or your tears for my sake or a chain of thorns, or a chain of rants or a ring of flames, or one more chance. Everyone is just waiting.

My Hero Lives On

My Hero Lives On I remember my visits to my nana’s home, Where my body and mind were free to roam. We were princesses by day and faeries by night, My ghostly impressions giving my Nan a fright. Tea in the garden and song in the air, Even when raining, we didn’t care. For when she was smiling that smile at you, The whole world would smile too. I’d laugh till I cried, and cry till I’d laugh, The light of your love, guiding my path. But the day you slipped away from me, Was the day when I had to set you free, Free from the world, and free from my mind, As you went forward and left me behind. For my hero died when I was ten, But her memory lives on, until I see her again. [For the contest Holding out for a Hero by Janette Fisher]

Failure -Failed-

Failure The flashbacks of my life, the one I spent aimlessly wading through. Through laughs and tears, through arguments meant for me and you. We had a world of dreams at our door, this place was ours, our safe house, bringing our pasts together in the eclipse of our future. I feel the torment of your mind, the very pull of the wrong direction, away from me and away from our future. And I feel the torment of my heart, the pull of failure.

Mother's Nature

I was the water beneath their feet, the Warm breeze that swept past them as They took their first steps to The Promise Land. I moved them forward with little persuasion, Their minds racing with the anticipation of Life being given by my gentle hand. The trees twisted before their eyes; The sounds of the past filling their souls As my warm breath filled the air. The coyote called to you, the sky blushed, The ancient faces of years gone by, Gathered, their whispers hushed. Your faces, I remember, to this day, Were filled with dread and joy, But I knew the future you had ahead; To fight, loathe and destroy.
